Common Sense Media Features All Fred Rogers' Company Programs in their “Essential TV Guide”

Common Sense Media helps families make smart media choices. They offer the largest, most trusted library of independent age-based and educational ratings and reviews for movies, games, apps, TV shows, websites, books, and music.  This week they put together an "Essential TV Guide" of shows and characters they felt were "a positive force in all kids’ lives."

We are honored that Common Sense Media featured all four shows produced by The Fred Rogers Company. Here is what they had to say about our work:

"Parents need to know that this TV classic's messages about social responsibility, respect, and self-esteem are just as relevant today as they were at the show's start in the 1960s. The series uses music, make believe, and everyday tasks to illustrate kid-friendly themes like honesty, overcoming fears, and being a good friend. Field trips expose viewers to how common products are made, and the host's visits with his neighbors demonstrate how their jobs benefit the community. Occasionally the show explores sensitive subjects like divorce or the loss of a loved one, but it's always done in a responsible manner that's appropriate for kids."

"Parents need to know that Peg + Cat is a preschool series that incorporates foundational math skills in a creative and exciting way. The characters count, sort, and group their way to solutions to everyday problems, and the stories often illustrate concepts like superlatives, ordinal numbers, rhyming, and musical rhythm as well. What's more, because it's a girl leading the charge to solve these numbers quandaries, the show challenges the traditional gender divide within the mathematical field. This series goes hand-in-hand with a multimedia platform that includes an educational website (which is advertised at the end of each episode), videos, and a mobile app."

"Parents need to know that Odd Squad incorporates math concepts such as counting and patterns into a lively multimedia presentation grade-schoolers will enjoy. Each episode sees two kids confronted with a problem that can only be solved by relating numbers through addition, subtraction, fact families, and other grade-school math skills. Viewers can hypothesize along with the characters as they work out the problems using the data presented in each story, and the fact that the agents never lose sight of their goals or succumb to negativity -- even when a solution is elusive -- reminds kids of the value of learning from mistakes."

"Parents need to know that Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood is produced by The Fred Rogers Company and, aside from being an animated series centered on a young tiger, closely parallels the gentle tone and emphasis on social strategies that have made Mister Rogers' Neighborhood a TV icon. Preschoolers will be drawn to Daniel and his friends, and his experiences will validate the emotions they experience -- such as disappointment, sadness, frustration, and joy -- before demonstrating age-appropriate techniques for dealing with them. The show has strong messages about friendship and family bonds, as well as respect for curiosity, and each story offers opportunities for basic preschool skills like letter sounds and counting. This delightful series is a well-rounded choice for little kids, and parents who have fond memories of Mister Rogers will enjoy revisiting his messages with a new generation of characters."
