The Lullabies to Literacy training focuses on the kinds of experiences that help young children develop a positive attitude about literacy. It offers insights and strategies into emergent literacy in three areas: spoken language, reading, and writing.
The overall goal is to give caregivers and parents an appreciation for how much they influence literacy when they build a caring, nurturing relationship – and offer ordinary, everyday experiences that can make children want to learn to read and write.
The Lullabies to Literacy training materials include:
Facilitator’s Guide – Housed in a convenient, durable, 3-ring binder, the Facilitator’s Guide contains full, clear, and easy-to-follow instructions for leading this 2-hour workshop (see Training Outline).

The Guide is designed to be used by inexperienced as well as experienced trainers. The workshop is highly interactive and includes:
- Small group discussion
- Hands-on activities
- Large group discussion
- Video segments to evoke discussion
- Minimum lecture

CD-ROM with PowerPoint and PDF files –The workshop materials are available on CD-ROM, including all handout materials as well as video segments.
Handout Masters – Reproducible handout masters that include:
- Take-home materials with activities to help child care providers and parents create literacy-friendly environments;
- Ideas about how to nurture and incorporate early literacy into daily routines;
- Episodes from MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD that focus on emergent literacy.

Video Components – Video segments include clips from the award-winning documentary, Conversations in Rhyme as well as segments from MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD.

Background Materials – Background materials include a short biography of Fred Rogers, information about the developmental approach to his work and philosophy and articles written by Fred Rogers that trainers can use to enhance the workshop.
